Why is the universe so vast and old, yet we haven't found any signs of intelligent life? Exploring possible explanations for the silence.

1. What is the Fermi Paradox?

The Fermi Paradox refers to the apparent contradiction between:

  • The high probability of extraterrestrial life existing (given the size and age of the universe)
  • The lack of any evidence, contact, or observation of such life

2. Key Facts

  • The universe is ~13.8 billion years old.
  • There are an estimated 100–400 billion stars in the Milky Way.
  • Many of these stars likely have planets, and a significant number may be in habitable zones.
  • Given these numbers, intelligent life should be common — yet we see no signs of it.
  • Even if life developed, if it's outside our local group, thay are out of our reach.

The Great Filter

There might be a difficult stage in the evolution of life that most civilizations don't survive.

Self-Destruction

Advanced civilizations might destroy themselves (e.g. nuclear war, climate collapse, AI).

Rare Earth Hypothesis

The conditions for intelligent life might be extremely rare.

They're Here, We Just Haven't Noticed

Signals might be too faint, too different, or we're not looking in the right way.

Advanced civilizations might intentionally stay hidden (the Dark Forest hypothesis).

4. Types of Civilizations

The Kardashev Scale classifies civilizations based on how much energy they are capable of harnessing.

Type I — Planetary Civilization

A civilization capable of harnessing and using most of the energy available on its home planet, including solar, wind, geothermal, and other sources.

Type II — Stellar Civilization

A civilization capable of harnessing the energy output of its entire star. A hypothetical Dyson Sphere is one proposed way this could be achieved.

Type III — Galactic Civilization

A civilization capable of harnessing energy on the scale of an entire galaxy, potentially controlling or utilizing the resources of billions of star systems.

Humanity has not yet reached Type I. We are sometimes estimated to be around Type 0.7, meaning we still rely primarily on a fraction of the energy available on Earth.
